HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (September 12, 2022) – Madison Core Laboratories (MCL) recently started testing for monkeypox. The Huntsville-based company developed an MPXduPlex test that is validated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), the group that regulates laboratory testing for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
“We have the capabilities in our molecular diagnostics laboratory to move quickly and respond to the needs of the community and beyond to provide high-quality tests for emerging pathogens like monkeypox as well as other clinical conditions,” said Dr. Jeff Wisotzkey, Madison Core Labs’ chief scientific officer. “Our primary goal is to take great care of patients in which monkeypox may be a concern.”
Clients order the tests and results are reported back within two days of receipt.
Human monkeypox is a zoonotic disease (infections spread between people and animals) caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). The virus has spread rapidly worldwide since an outbreak was declared by the World Health Organization in May. The U.S. declared monkeypox a public health emergency in August. Monkeypox cannot be conclusively diagnosed by symptoms alone because many symptoms closely resemble those of other rash-producing illnesses. A confirmatory lab test is essential for an accurate diagnosis to properly care for individuals who have contracted the disease and for those who may have been exposed.
Madison Core Laboratories is one of the leading independent laboratories in Alabama. MCL provides extensive lab services using state-of-the-art testing equipment to provide clients with the latest innovations in the laboratory spectrum. Clients include physician offices, long-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, homebound patients and industrial/corporate testing needs. MCL is the only independent reference laboratory in Alabama that offers mobile phlebotomy, molecular diagnostics, routine blood, urine, microbiology and toxicology testing under one organization. MCL was recently recognized by Inc. magazine as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the Southeast.
